Watercolours

Watercolour, for me is perhaps the hardest and un-forgiving medium with which to work in as an artist.

The paint dries too fast, the paper bleeds through, the colours run together in a somewhat unpredictable way. This may be why I prefer oil painting. With oils, you can let the painting stand a bit, stand back and look at it, then proceed. With Watercolours though you have to be focused, and almost have the end product in mind. Of course if talk to a true Watercolour artist you may get a much different opinion. Nonetheless, here are a few of the ones I've managed to squeeze out over the years. The one above titled "Autumn Reflections" is perhaps my most favorite. It was less forced than some of the others and it was fun to do.

Beach Over Dunes :

Though I've lived close to the beach since the early 1990s, I've never really captured much of the scene in the way of art. Most of the more dramatic pieces of work of the ocean have been pastels and oils, many times with the theme of a sunset or sunrise.

Garden Wall :

While living in Sarasota Florida (USA), I was able to get around to many of the cities lush gardens. Some of these were old, and not as well-tended. To me that was more intriguing, in that it seemed nature was taking the opportunity to take back what was hers.

The Old Mill :

This was of an old mill house near Knoxville Tennessee (USA). It was located very near the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Close to a local tourist trap called Gatlinburg.

Old Barn, Franklin TN:

This was from a series of landscape photography I took back in the late 1970s. It was late summer going on winter as the season goes in Tennessee.

Farmland, Franklin TN:

The photo this painting referenced was from the top of the many mountain tops, or as many locals would just say, hills. It wasn't a mountian until you got up into the Smokey Mountains.

Mill Creek, Nolensville, TN:

This is an area outside of Nolensville, TN near where I lived during middle school through high school. As a kid/tennager we spent many days swimming in the creek, catching crawdads (small freshwater lobsters), box turtles and such.

Old Barn: Cades Cove, TN:

This was in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park, the location was called "Cades Cove." It was a beautiful area that had camping and hiking. It was so remove in some campsites that you had to check in at the ranger station to get a permit as to what site you were going to stay. That way if you didin't show up when you were suppose to be back they knew where to go look for you. A lot of Black Bears up there in the mountains.
