This was done from photography in Jamaica. If you've never been, it is certainly worth the trip. Just south of Cuba, it has a very diverse terrain. It has beautiful white sand beaches, it has fantastic mountain ranges where they grow the very expensive "Black Mountain Coffee," it has Amazon type jungle rivers with famous alligators larger than the tour boats, and it has these beautiful bamboo forests that are as tall as some pine trees. Here, the unique way they lean together to create a canopy over the trail, and they way the light shines through the branches, lent itself very well to the subtle textures and softness of pastels. |

Guanna Park, St. Augustine, Florida (USA) : There are many fantastic state parks in the state of Florida, but this one happens to be just about in my back yard. The park itself is on two sides of highway A1A that stretches from the state of Main to tip of Key West Florida. This is one of the many wooden walkways built in the park that takes hikers over the wet marsh lands, allowing them to view nature up close and personal.

Guanna Palms, St. Augustine, Florida (USA) As with most area of Florida, there are many a tall pines. They can take on quite a different appearance depending on their location. They don't seem to grow quite as tall as some of the Carolina pines I've seen, but tall nonetheless. They are however prone to falling over. Partly when they are closer to the beach ares because of the lose sand, but mostly because of the strong winds that blow in from the hurricanes. |

Guanna Meadows Swaying Guanna Palms, St. Augustine, Florida (USA) So, by now I'm sure you've figured out I love this park. There are many such parks in this state, but this ones close proximity makes it convenient to capture the beauty of what this state has to offer before the developers completely pave it over. |
Night Ocean Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida (USA) The photo for this pastel was taken on the beach side of Guanna State Park. It's one of the best kept secrets in the area, in that it's not visited by too many people. If local politicians and their special interests get their way that may change. For this pastel I used a darker tone of pastels to reflect the combination of the red sunset and the moon's reflection on the waves. |
Broken Pier Guanna Palms, New Smyrna Beach, Florida (USA) Driving a little further south on Florida's highway A1A, and as luck would have it, many a pier in this state have damaged by hurricanes. I have not revisited this one since I took the photo back in the late 80s, but this is what it looked like then. |
Sarasota Palms Sarasota, Florida (USA) One of the unique aspects of Sarasota, is that the beach and the Gulf of Mexico just seem to become one. On the west coast of Florida it's pretty flat, and you can usually take a beach chair just a few feet out into the water and pretty much stay there all day. The beaches don't have the same tide levels or the waves that you get on the east coast. |
Mallory Square Sunset Key West , Florida (USA) This is about as far south as you can get in the state of Florida without taking a boat ride. The famous landing at Mallory square is a traditional gathering place for artisans, craftsman and tourist to come and watch the sunset. This pastel was created at the same time as the "Night Ocean," using the same deep purples and blues to capture the mood of the sun setting over the blue waters. |
