Paintings: 1970s

Oils

Though there were many paintings prior to the 1970s, these were the first that were created professionally speaking.

The Dead Tree: 1976
This was my first large canvas at 36"x48". It was (as many of my paintings) taken from a pencil sketch of a dream I had. I was running through a dark forest away from something chasing me and was stopped by the tree. I looked up, and as far as I could see were dead branches. To your best shot at the one Freud.

Day in the Park: 1979
These next two paintings are related. The first is of my ex-wife and myself at the time we were married and she was expecting our child. The unicorn represented the spirit of our unborn son.The expression on my face is looking to the future, where I saw a life without them.

Unicorn Lake : 1979
This is one in a series of what I called my "Master Project." The idea was to have a continous series of paintings, that when lined up end-to-end, would make one hugh panaramic view. Notice who right side of this painting will lin up with the one above it.

Encore to a Dead Audience: 1979
This is another part of the "Master Plan", as are all the paintings above, including the "Dead Tree.". What makes these paintings line up is not their canvas hight, but the horizon line. The story behind this painting is of course the second coming of Chirst. Only we humans have already destroyed our world and there's no one left to come back and save. The right side of this painting aligns with the left side of the "Dead Tree."

Snoopy: 1979
Yes, even this painting is part of the "Master Plan." What seemed like a very dark time in my life, all is lost, and not even the Peanuts character Snoppy can save me - as he is shown here about to take a plung off a cliff. I'm pictured trapped below behind bars under the tree screaming for him not to jump!
